The Importance of Swimming Lessons For Children

As we approach spring time and the weather is warming there is an increase in drownings.

One of the greatest causes of accidental deaths among preschool children is drowning. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2007 almost 30% of children ages 1 to 4 who died of an unintentional injury died of drowning.

Parent participation in swim lessons are vital because the long term practice needed to enhance the child’s ability to survive if they should fall into a body of water is essential. It is just like any other skill they learn, practice practice practice is the key to strengthening the skill and building their confidence.. Generally, the children who have their parents involved in the swimming lessons will coordinate better and become skillful swimmers long before those do not have such opportunity.

In its updated policy, the AAP has revised its guidance on swimming lessons. This new guideline is a monumental change that indicates that the AAP recognizes the evidence that U.S. Swim School Association member schools have been promoting for years: formal swim lessons are a vital part of the multilevel approach to drowning prevention and water safety. They believe that by giving this knowledge to parents, much better results can eventually be achieved, as parents may practice the skills outside the formal environment of baby swimming lessons. Swimming lessons can be an important part of the overall protection, which should include pool barriers and constant, capable supervision.

The statement goes on to say that new evidence shows that children ages 1 to 4 may be less likely to drown if they have had formal swimming instruction.

Drownings don’t discriminate,It can happen and does to ANYONE.

There is NO cure for drowning only PREVENTION. Every parent, pool owner should know all of the layers of protection to have in place to prevent these senseless drownings.

Learn to Swim – Water Phobia

Water phobia is a common mental block among adults and children. What are the ways to overcome it and enhance your water confidence?

As a swimming coach, I always have a concern when I am conducting a new swimming class. I did not have a thorough knowledge of the students’ level of water confidence and my perception of their confidence derived from their age. From my years of experience, I always find that those who are older tend to be more water confidence. The student’s height may contribute to their water confidence as mentally they are capable of standing in the pool if anything happen to them. However, this perception does not work always for me.

So what are the steps to overcome their water phobia and make swimming enjoyable for them?

Fun Orientated

If the student is water phobia, the advancement of achievement tends to be leisurely. I did not want the student to develop a fear whenever they have to attend the lesson. Lessons must be conducted in a fun manner to increase the student water confidence.

The First Step to the Swim Pool

First, you have to guide the student to the swim pool in some scenarios. The height of the student will determine which type of pool I will bring the student to commence the lesson. If the student is a young toddler, I will bring them to the baby pool. I always like to use the steps to guide them into walking the pool. The steps will provide a sense of security that their legs are competent of reaching and at the same time, I will hold one of their hands firmly to assure them. If the student do not trust me as I am still a stranger to them, I will ask the parent to assist. Normally, I will bring my adult student to teaching pool which is about 1.2 meters in height to commence the lessons.

Feel the Water

When the student is adapting comfortable to the water environment, it is a clear signal to get the student wet. The basic way of starting is to pour water over the student head gradually. It gives the student the feel of water and gradually increases their water confidence. If the children are not adapting well to the environment, toys can be utilized to distract them and get them to be comfortable with the water.

Frequency of the Lesson

Lesson must be conducted in a regular interval to enhance the performance of the student. Water phobia student requires more time than other student to adapt to the water conditions. If there is no improvement, do not give up. Patience is the key to their success.

Water phobia student need the essential techniques to overcome it. Encouragement and patience is the key to overcome it. Most importantly, they must have fun when learning to swim. Have fun.
